The national park is open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day (barring a government shutdown.) However, because of snow, some sections of the park are not accessible during the winter such as Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road. This year Trail Ridge Road opened on June 5, after numerous May snowstorms brought significant snow and drifting above 11,500 feet. Last year, the road opened on May 24, and in 2017, a snowstorm in late May kept it closed until May 31.Rocky Mountain National Park is in northeast Colorado, flanked by the towns of Estes Park on the east and Grand Lake on the west. Trail Ridge Road normally opens the last week in May, weather permitting. The latest the road has ever opened for the season was June 26, 1943, while the earliest was May 7, 2002. ![]() This year, continued storms prevented that from happening, pushing the opening into June. Part staff tries to open Trail Ridge by Memorial Day weekend each year. In April each year, snowplow operators start on each side of the park and begin working their way toward the Alpine Visitor Center, on average plowing 42 days per season. The 48-mile-long road sees drifts that can reach 20 feet or more in the winter. Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the country, reaching an elevation of 12,183 feet, crossing the Continental Divide, with 11 miles above treeline. Park staff is not currently planning to close the road at night, but weather conditions change rapidly and that could become a possibility, a news release states. Trail Ridge Road is now open for the season, but despite warm weather at much lower elevations, there could still be wintry conditions on the scenic route through Rocky Mountain National Park.Ī spokeswoman for the national park reported Wednesday that visitors should still be prepared for icy conditions caused by melting snow and the potential for freezing temperatures.
